چکیده

We present results of ALMA (Cycle-0) observations of the CO (6-5) line emission and the 435μm continuum of two nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) NGC 34 (a major merger with an AGN) and NGC 1614 (a minor merger with a circum-nuclear starburst). Using receivers in the highest frequency ALMA band available (Band-9), these observations achieved the best angular resolutions (∼ 0′′.25) for ALMA Cycle-0 observations and resolved for the first time distributions of warm dense molecular gas (n > 10 cm−3 , T > 100 K) in LIRGs with spatial resolutions better than 100 pc. Our ALMA data show a very tight correlation between the CO (6-5) line emission and the 435μm dust continuum emission, suggesting the warm dense molecular gas dominates the ISM in the central kpc of LIRGs, and gas heating and dust heating in the warm dense gas cores are strongly coupled. On the other hand, we saw very different spatial distributions and kinematic properties of warm dense gas in the two LIRGs, indicating that physical conditions in the ISM can be very different in different LIRGs.

Dense molecular gas in a sample of LIRGs and ULIRGs: The low-redshift connection to the huge high-redshift starbursts and AGNs

The sample of nearby LIRGs and ULIRGs for which dense molecular gas tracers have been measured is building up, allowing for the study of the physical and chemical properties of the gas in the variety of objects in which the most intense star formation and/or AGN activity in the local universe is taking place. This characterisation is essential to understand the processes involved, discard other...

Warm-Dense Molecular Gas in the ISM of Starbursts, LIRGs and ULIRGs

The role of star formation in luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs, LIR 10 L ; ULIRGs, LIR 10 L ) is a hotly debated issue: while it is clear that starbursts play a large role in powering the IR luminosity in these galaxies, the relative importance of possible enshrouded AGNs is unknown. It is therefore important to better understand the role of star-forming gas in contributing t...

Is HCN a True Tracer of Dense Molecular Gas in LIRGs and ULIRGs?

We present the results of the first HCO survey probing the dense molecular gas content of a sample of 16 luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs). Previous work, based on HCN(1–0) observations, had shown that LIRGs and ULIRGs posses a significantly higher fraction of dense molecular gas compared to normal galaxies. While the picture issued from HCO partly confirms this re...

HCN versus HCO as dense molecular gas mass tracer in Luminous Infrared Galaxies

It has been recently argued that the HCN J=1–0 line emission may not be an unbiased tracer of dense molecular gas (n & 10 cm) in Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs: LFIR > 10 11 L⊙) and HCO + J=1–0 may constitute a better tracer instead (Graciá-Carpio et al. 2006), casting doubt into earlier claims supporting the former as a good tracer of such gas (Gao & Solomon 2004; Wu et al. 2006). In this p...

Warm and Cold Molecular Gas in Luminous Infrared Galaxies

We present the properties of the warm and cold molecular gas in a sample of local Luminous Infrared Galaxies in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). The rotational transitions of H2 observed in the Mid-Infrared Spectra from the Spitzer Survey trace gas at temperatures about 100K, while the 12 CO (1-0) maps acquired with the Combined Array for Millimeter Astronomy identify the mo...
